Antique Victorian necklace featuring flat cut garnet gemstones set in silver gilt. Each garnet gemstone has been cut to reflect the light, the stones are deep red, changing in colour as light moves around them. Silver gilt is a term used for laying gold over silver.
Garnets were used extensively in all different designs of Victorian jewellery, bracelets, rings, brooches and elaborate necklaces, they represent the birthstone of January. Seed pearls in the Victorian era were associated with a number of symbols such as innocence, purity, humility and harmony.
